In March 2012 at SSU a lecture was given by Prof. M. Epple from Duisburg-Essen University (Germany): "Biomaterials: from centimeter to nanometer dimensions." After exchange of information on research areas in general and the activities in the field of new biomaterials for medicine, prof. Epple proposed the idea of ​​the next German-Ukrainian Symposium on Nanotechnology, which will be in Ilmenau (Germany) this year in collaboration with SSU and Kharkov University. Returning to the presentation that has caused great interest we should note the following. Creating new biomaterials to restore lost functions of the human body is one of the main themes of modern science. Artificial leather, artificial blood vessels, bone tissue and cardiac stimulants - it's some examples of existing biomaterials. Materials based on calcium orthophosphates are very important, because of their content correspond to the mineral part of bones and teeth. Further research in this area will be conducted to form more complex and therefore more close to natural structures so-called composite biomaterials based on apatite-biopolymer complexes that can participate in the process of regeneration of bone tissue in situ,  a bone tissue engineering. It was agreed that such studies will be carried out in cooperation between the two universities.
